Using HijackThis How to use Hijackthis to create a log file for submission. This text uses the latest version of hijackthis.exe ... at the time of this writing it is version 2.0.0 (BETA).

Download HijackThis

If you already have Hijackthis (HJT) on your system you can bypass this step.  Point your web browser to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php and download the latest version of HJT.  For ease of use, simply save the EXE file to the Desktop.  Once this is complete, you should have an icon on the Desktop that looks similar to this:

Running HJT

Double-click the icon on the Desktop to run HJT.  You should see a window similar to that on the right.  Click the button that says Do a system scan and save a logfile.  You can sit back and relax at this point for a minute or two.  If some unexpected error occurs, or HJT fails to run properly, please check the Support and Troubleshooting documentation on the website where you acquired HJT.

When HJT is running you will see a display similar to this.  This is creating a logfile of various things such as startup items, running processes, registry entries, etc.  These are the things used to troubleshoot behaviour caused by bad entries, spyware, other malware, and what-not.

When the process is finished a text file will be open to display the logfile.  You can close this if you wish.  You will notice a file created in the same folder you ran HJT from that is called hijackthis.log.  If you ran HJT from the Desktop, you will have the file somewhere on the Desktop.

Now, simply attach this log file to an email, and send it off to the person or place helping you troubleshoot your computer's problem(s).
