Local ISP Comparison Chart

We are asked common questions about available ISPs all the time. The common questions (and answers) are:

"what is the best ISP to go with?"
answer: the one that gives you the most value, stability and service for the lowest price

"do I have to switch from B2B2 to Ripnet?"
answer: No, you can stay with B2B2 - it's your choice regardless of what you've heard, read or been told.
If you choose to stay with B2B2c you will lose your Ripnet email address

"how come Sympatico won't let me use my own modem?"
answer: call 310-SURF and ask - I have, many times, with no justifiable answer

Therefore, as a customer service, to get a fair deal with every aspect of the Internet we present the charts below. By examining these charts you will see for yourself a non-biased comparison between the three ISPs we deal with the most, and you can decide for yourself "who is the best ISP to go with?".

We cannot stress enough, if you have any questions regarding service, pricing or anything else, please call the ISP in question - they will be more than happy to assist you!

    DEFINITIONS:

Account Package - This is basically the speed of your connection. Although DSL can vary in speeds depending on your proximity to "the central office", this would be the maximum speed. In the above charts, 0.04MB/second would be really slow compared to 4MB/sec.

Cap - the amount of data you can transfer; incoming and outgoing combined. If you exceed the amount in the plan you are charged a premium rate for extra bandwidth. The only exception to this I've seen on an ISP's website is B2B2c's ZERO SURCHARGE GUARANTEE, which states The charged over usage will be credited, following your request of migration to a yearly agreement on a price plan that includes more transfer.

IP address - An IP address is basically your identification on the Internet. A Dynamic IP Address will change every time you connect to the Internet, a Static IP Address remains the same - no matter how many times you connect/disconnect. For the most part, everyday users want a Dynamic IP Address. A Static IP could compromise your security and computer unless you knew how to avoid such outside threats.

email - the number of email accounts you can have (ie: one for every member of the family)

News - the availability of Newsgroups.

Antivirus - Most ISPs are set-up to scan your email (not read it) for potential Virus threats before the message even gets to your Inbox. In the above plans you will see this is either included Free, or you have to pay a premium amount for it.

AntiSpam - Most ISPs are set-up to scan your email (not read it) for potential SPAM (or garbage mail) before the message even gets to your Inbox. In the above plans you will see this is either included Free, or you have to pay a premium amount for it.

Modem Rental Available - when you switch from dial-up to HiSpeed, you will need a new DSL modem. Most ISPs will rent you a DSL modem for a nominal fee (Sympatico insists you rent their modem and they include the price in the monthly fee). Some ISPs will allow you to use your own modem and avoid the rental fee. Computer vendors such as us, and some ISPs have modems available for sale.
