Configure Outlook Express

The following steps will allow you to use Outlook Express as an email client. To begin you should have the following ready:

  • your user name
  • your password
  • your ISP's incoming mail server name, usually pop.something.com
  • your ISP's outgoing mail server name, usually smtp.something.com or mail.something.com
  • any special port settings you may need (for Sympatico, see later in this document)

In Outlook Express, click Tools > Accounts

Click Add > Mail...

oe2.png

You are now asked for your display name. This is the name other people will see the message is from when you send out an email. You can type anything you want here, but most people use their name, or The Doe Family, or something similar. When you have finished typing in a name, click Next.

oe3.png

Now you must enter your email address. This will have been created by you, or supplied by your Internet provider. It is important that you get this correct - so double-check the spelling! When finished, click Next.

oe4.png

Pay special attention that you get the following correct. A single typo here will mean the difference of sending/receiving email, or not. Your ISP should have supplied you with this information. If you use Sympatico email your settings will be a little different - please see the end of this document for Sympatico Email.
Your Incoming mail server is usually something like pop.ispname.com. Use the name supplied to you in the first step. The next is your Outgoing server name, and it is usually something like smtp.ispname.com, or mail.ispname.com. When you have finished typing in the correct information, click Next.

oe5.png

When you click finish you should have a working email application. Go ahead and try it out. If something didn't work the way you expect, go back over this document and double-check everything ... 90% of the time the problem is simply a typo, or leaving a space where you shouldn't have.

Sympatico Email

Sympatico email is generally the same as setting up any other email account. Since Sympatico uses security settings, a few of the values you type in will be slightly different than what you've seen above.

The server settings with Sympatico are:

  • Incoming mail - pophm.sympatico.ca
  • Outgoing mail - smtphm.sympatico.ca

Fill in these values and click Next.

sympoe1.png

Your username with Sympatico is not the b1xxxx number you use to connect to the Internet. This is usually your email address. Again, fill in these values and click Next. On the next screen click Finish. We are almost done.

sympoe2.png

Back at the Internet Accounts screen, click once on your account to highlight it, and then click the Properties button. We now have to configure the way Outlook Express interacts with Sympatico's secure servers.

sympoe3.png

Click the Servers tab at the top of this box. Place a checkmark in the box to tell Outlook Express that this server requires authentication. Then click the Settings button to configure the security for the SMTP server.

sympoe4.png

Here we simply tell Outlook Express we wish to use the same credentials as our Incoming mail server. For most people, this should be adequate. Next, click OK.

sympoe5.png

Click the Advanced tab at the top of the window. Place a checkmark in the SSL boxes near the top of this window, and you should notice your POP3 port change from 110 to 995. If it doesn't, manually enter 995 in the Incoming mail (POP3) box. Next, move the slider over to indicate the server timeout setting. Sympatico suggest sliding this all the way to the right, but a 3 minute timeout has worked on every application we've seen. Finally, click Apply.

You should now be able to send and receive Sympatico email. If you experience a problem, make sure you double-check all your typing and box selections before hitting the Panic button.
